Our Take

Maple & Ash solves a problem nobody thought needed solving: Chicago's steakhouse scene splits between white-tablecloth relics serving cake the size of a toddler and glossy new-money rooms built for tie clips. This one refuses to pick a side. The portions and the quality run old-school — serious cuts, serious size — while the room and the energy belong to something younger, louder, more alive.

Ride the elevator to the second floor and the dining room opens into plush seating and a soundtrack that has no business working in a steakhouse, except it does. This isn't a museum piece. People are having fun, and the food doesn't suffer for it.

That balance is the whole achievement. Plenty of places nail the meat and lose the room, or nail the room and coast on the meat. Maple & Ash keeps both running at full strength, which is harder than it sounds and rarer than it should be.

Four consecutive years on Chicago's Michelin list back up what the room already tells you. A pastry program strong enough to earn a national semifinalist nod seals it. This is a steakhouse worth choosing on purpose, not by default.

The Spot
Maple & Ash sits on Maple Street in Chicago's Gold Coast, the original location of a steakhouse under Maple Hospitality Group that has since opened in Boston, Miami, and Scottsdale. The menu is crafted by Chef Danny Grant, built around a celebration-driven, maximalist take on the steakhouse format rather than a stripped-down chophouse script.

The spread runs wide: seafood towers, caviar, oysters, crab legs, and tartare sit alongside steaks, meatballs, octopus, and sides like brussels sprouts and wedge salad, with a brunch service in the mix as well. The wine program has also drawn notice, with Wine Spectator naming the list one of the most outstanding in the world.

Maple & Ash has been Michelin Selected in the Gold Coast in 2021, 2023, 2024, and 2025.
