Our Take

HK Lounge Bistro carries the DNA of Hong Kong Lounge II, the Richmond institution that burned down in 2019, into a smaller, pinker room in SoMa. The move downsized the space but not the ambition. This is still a kitchen built around Cantonese dim sum done with real precision, not a reheated greatest-hits menu coasting on nostalgia.

Go at lunch, when the cart work and the small plates carry the meal. The siu mai is meaty and tightly packed, the xiao long bao hold their soup properly, and the pork buns are baked rather than steamed, which matters. Crispy seafood noodles and sesame balls round out a table fast when the dishes keep arriving the way they're supposed to.

Portions run small and the bill adds up quicker than a casual dim sum spot suggests it should. That's the real complaint, and it's fair. But the execution stays consistent plate after plate, which is the harder thing to pull off at this volume.

Michelin selected it in 2026. The recognition tracks with what's on the table, not the other way around.

The Spot
HK Lounge Bistro picked up where Hong Kong Lounge II left off after a 2019 fire closed that Richmond location. It reopened across town in SoMa, in a smaller room with salmon-colored walls, operated by MacKenzie Chung Fegan and Cesar Hernandez.

The menu runs on Cantonese classics: siu mai, xiao long bao, baked pork buns, and crispy seafood noodles make up the core of the dim sum spread, with fried or steamed sesame balls for dessert. The kitchen serves both lunch and dinner, plus take-out and catering.

Regulars describe it as a local gem for authentic Cantonese cooking, with fresh ingredients and consistent execution driving the reputation. The restaurant was selected for the Michelin Guide in 2026.
