Our Take

Palette Tea House sits inside Ghirardelli Square, which tells you nothing good on paper — that's chocolate-tourist territory, not where San Francisco eats. The restaurant, from the team behind Dragon Beaux, ignores the location's cheap instincts entirely. This is real dim sum, plated with a level of visual care that borders on showing off: each dumpling and bao arrives composed like someone actually thought about color and shape before it hit the table.

The kitchen backs up the presentation. The food reads as authentic rather than smoothed over for a tourist crowd, and the consistency holds across visits — not a given in a dining district built for one-time traffic. Service matches the ambition instead of coasting on the view. The room itself earns its keep too, polished without feeling like a stage set.

Cost is the one real complaint, and it's fair — this isn't cart-and-cash dim sum pricing. But the quality justifies sitting down here even without a map and a camera around your neck.

A spot in the city's Michelin guide confirms what the regulars already knew: this is a destination restaurant that happens to be squatting in a tourist trap, not the other way around.

The Spot
Palette Tea House sits at the heart of Ghirardelli Square, founded by the family behind Koi Palace and Dragon Beaux. It brings a modern approach to Cantonese cooking — dim sum, seafood, and wok dishes served in a room built for an upscale, polished experience rather than a quick lunch counter.

The menu runs through dim sum, live seafood, Peking duck, and a curated cocktail list, with dishes known for arriving in vivid, carefully composed presentations. The Mango Pudding Supreme — a small arrangement of mango mousse, popping boba, and berries — has become a dessert people order specifically. Regulars also point to the milk tea as a standout alongside the dumplings.

Palette Tea House was selected in the Michelin Guide's 2026 edition.
