Our Take

Movida is a scene restaurant that actually has a kitchen worth paying attention to, which is rarer than it should be. The room does the nightclub thing hard — velvet couches, a DJ booth, a crowd that stays late — but the Persian-Mexican fusion on the menu isn't a gimmick riding on the atmosphere. It's the other way around: dishes built from two cuisines that don't usually meet, backed by drinks like the Como La Flor, pisco and sumac working a spicy, floral angle that actually tastes considered.

The move here is to stay small. The shareable plates are where the kitchen's ideas land — inventive, well-balanced, worth building a meal around. The entrees don't keep pace, and skipping straight to a second round of starters is the smarter order. Portions run tight and the inconsistency shows dish to dish, but when it connects, it connects in a way nothing else in the neighborhood is attempting.

A Michelin Selected nod for 2026 backs up what the room already proves: this is a legitimate kitchen wearing a lounge's clothes. Order carefully, lean on the small plates, and it's a genuinely good night out.

The Spot
Movida sits in SoMa, just blocks from Oracle Park, built around a fusion of Persian and Mexican flavors served in a high-energy bar/lounge setting. The room leans into a nightclub-like atmosphere, with a DJ booth and velvet-couch seating that pushes the space closer to a scene than a quiet dinner spot.

The menu runs through shareable plates like Pomegranate Adobo Chicken Taquitos, Sweet Corn Ribs with sumac and cotija, and Bone Marrow Mazeh with crispy onions and marmalade, alongside a Caviar Service featuring golden Kaluga sturgeon. Fusion Skewers — Saffron Chicken, Jalapeño Beef and Lamb Koobideh, and a Filet Mignon Barg Asada — sit next to mains like Saffron Prawns in seared saffron butter and an Aguachile built on local fish and tomatillo. The cocktail program uses house-made infusions and seasonal ingredients.

Movida was selected for the Michelin Guide in 2026.
