Our Take

Mister Jiu's puts a tasting menu over Chinatown's most theatrical dining room. Gold lotus chandeliers hang over an open kitchen where a line of cooks works under spotlights, tweezing garnishes into place for a five-course menu that forces a choice at the end: mu shu mushrooms or a whole Peking duck, family-style, the center of the table. It's a different restaurant than the one that opened in 2016, built on a la carte plates instead of a fixed format, and that change cost it some of its looseness.

What survives the shift is the kitchen's command of technique and the room's nerve. The format asks more of you financially than the old menu did, and not every course closes that gap with wow. But the consensus from people actually eating there holds steady: the food lands, the service keeps pace even when the room gets loud, and the whole thing reads as worth it rather than a cash grab dressed up in chandeliers.

A Michelin star landed in 2026, and the restaurant keeps turning up on the city's best-of lists more than a decade in. That's not legacy credit. It's a kitchen still operating at a level worth the trip to Chinatown.

The Spot
Mister Jiu's occupies a landmark building in San Francisco's Chinatown that once held the historic Four Seas and Hang Far Low restaurants. Owner and executive chef Brandon Jew runs the kitchen, pairing traditional Chinese technique with the Bay Area's seasonal, organic ingredients.

The menu runs a la carte, with a banquet option built around the restaurant's signature dish: a Peking-style whole roasted duck sourced from Liberty Farm in Sonoma and prepared using traditional technique. Regulars describe the dining room as electric, with a drinks program that draws its own following.

Michelin has awarded Mister Jiu's one star. The restaurant's chef was a James Beard Best Chef winner in 2022, after being a finalist in 2020.
