Our Take

Benu runs on specialization so extreme it borders on theater, and that's the argument. Sixteen courses arrive with what feels like a dedicated server for each one — the anchovy specialist, the dumpling specialist, the water specialist, the wine specialist — and the effect isn't fussy, it's precise. Every hand in the room has exactly one job, and every job is done exceptionally well.

That precision is also the price of admission, literally. Add the abalone supplement to an already serious tab and you'll understand Benu isn't selling scarcity for its own sake — it's selling the idea that spending here buys something you can't get spending less. Some walk away convinced the hype outruns the plate. The weight of the evidence doesn't back that complaint: the food, the service, and the room are consistently called out as exceptional, not just expensive.

The wine program has been recognized as the best in the country, a James Beard win backed by multiple earlier finalist and semifinalist nods, and the restaurant itself has been a James Beard finalist for Best New Restaurant and a recent semifinalist for Outstanding Restaurant. Michelin now gives it three stars. The specialization earns every bit of it.

The Spot
Benu occupies a quiet corner of SoMa, where chef Corey Lee runs a kitchen built around fermentation and preservation techniques and scratch, house-made preparation across an extensive tasting menu. The format stretches to roughly sixteen courses, with service structured so that different staff members handle different parts of the meal — one for wine, another for a given course, and so on through the night.

The cooking draws on Asian technique and ingredients reimagined through a modern, highly technical lens, paired with a wine program that has drawn its own attention over the years.

Michelin awarded Benu three stars in its 2026 guide, and the restaurant was named to North America's 50 Best Restaurants in both 2025 and 2026. It has also collected a long run of James Beard recognition over the years, including an Outstanding Wine Program win and multiple finalist and winner honors for its chef and kitchen.
