Our Take

Joe's is stone crabs and paper bibs, a dining room that fills before the doors open and a wait that locals accept like weather. The chilled claws are good — simple, mustard sauce, nothing fussy — but they're not unique to this address; you can find the same crab elsewhere in South Florida without the line. The fried chicken on the menu is almost a joke, a throwaway dish that costs next to nothing and tastes like a decent home kitchen made it, not a landmark restaurant.

None of that is the point. Joe's has been serving this exact ritual since 1913, through a city that bulldozes its history on a schedule, and it has refused to blink. That stubbornness is the dish. Sitting in that room, bibbed up, waiting your turn alongside people who've done this for decades, is a specific Miami experience nothing else replicates. The cooking doesn't have to be the best in the city because the institution is the draw, and it delivers on that promise completely.

The recognition backs up what the room already proves: a James Beard America's Classics win in 1998, and a spot in Michelin's Miami selections for 2026. Over a century in, Joe's still earns the wait.

The Spot
Joe's Stone Crab traces back to 1913, when Joe Weiss opened a small lunch counter on Miami Beach, then still unincorporated. Joe cooked and his wife Jennie waited tables; by 1918 the couple had moved the operation into a bungalow on Biscayne Street, setting up tables on the porch and calling it Joe's Restaurant. That original partnership — Joe in the kitchen, Jennie on the floor — became the foundation for what the restaurant is today.

The menu centers on stone crab claws, sold chilled and cracked with mustard sauce in a range of sizes, and the Joe's Classic plate that pairs the claws with cole slaw, hashed brown potatoes, creamed spinach, and key lime pie. A Chilled Seafood Tower stacks stone crabs, Maine lobster, king crab, shrimp, oysters, tuna tartare, and crab meat, while starters run from East Coast oysters and ahi tuna tartare to grilled or fried shrimp. Soups include a stone crab bisque and a bacon-laced Manhattan clam chowder.

Dinner runs as full table service, and diners have long been handed paper bibs for the claws.

Joe's Stone Crab won a James Beard Foundation America's Classics award in 1998, and the restaurant was selected in the Michelin Guide's 2026 edition.
