Our Take

Macchialina has spent over a decade being the place people point to when they want to defend South Beach dining from itself, and the renovation didn't touch the reason why. The restaurant absorbed the old hostel next door and came out bigger, with a covered patio that makes outdoor seating genuinely worth fighting for and bathrooms that no longer force a sprint past an open kitchen. None of that is the point. The point is six pastas doing the real work on the menu, anchored by a polenta that shifts with whatever's in season rather than sitting static.

That's the case for calling this the best Italian kitchen on the beach: a short list of dishes held to a standard, not a menu padded to look impressive. The wine program backs it up rather than decorating it, which is why it's drawn back-to-back James Beard semifinalist recognition for Outstanding Wine Program.

A Michelin Guide selection and a spot on a national recognition list confirm what the room already knew. Macchialina isn't coasting on a decade of goodwill — it rebuilt the house and kept the cooking exactly as sharp as it needed to be.

The Spot
Macchialina is a neighborhood Italian restaurant on South Beach's residential west side, run by chef and owner Michael Pirolo, who trained in kitchens in Italy and New York before opening here. Pasta is the kitchen's throughline: every noodle on the menu is rolled, cut, and shaped by hand using seasonal, local ingredients.

Six pastas anchor the menu, among them Cavatelli Macchialina with baby meatballs, porchetta, and pecorino, and Tagliolini ai Funghi with abalone mushrooms and parmigiano. The bar runs its own lane alongside the wine list, including a cocktail called Midnight in Sicily, built on double-oak bourbon, cacao-infused vermouth, amaro, and black walnut bitters.

The restaurant has since expanded into the space next door, adding a covered outdoor patio and additional room to the original dining room.

Macchialina was selected in the Michelin Guide in 2026. It has also drawn multiple James Beard Foundation semifinalist nods over the years — for its wine program, and in earlier years, for its kitchen.
