Our Take

SRV takes its name seriously: the Serene Republic of Venice, reimagined as a South End bar built around baraci, the drink-and-snack spots Venetians duck into after work. The wine list sticks to Italian bottles only, the pasta runs through locally-milled flour, and the mussels sit in a Calabrian chili-spiked white wine bath that justifies ordering another round of grilled bread to mop it up. This is cichetti culture translated for a neighborhood that wants a reason to linger at the bar.

The service is the real flex. Pull a straw from your cocktail and the staff notices, quietly fixing the next one before you think to ask. That kind of attention, paired with food this specific, is rare in a room built for casual drop-ins rather than special occasions.

It isn't flawless — portions run small, and on an off night the kitchen and the floor can both slow down. But the floor is consistently high: a James Beard Best New Restaurant semifinalist nod and a spot on a national recognition list back up what the room already proves. Go for the spritzes and mussels, stay for the grilled bread, and don't skip a sauced pasta.

The Spot
SRV takes its format from bacari, the casual drink-and-snack bars found around Venice, and translates that into a South End wine bar built on cicchetti, pasta, and risotto. The wine list runs exclusively Italian, and the pasta is made from locally-milled flour, served alongside made-to-order risotto.

The menu moves between small cicchetti like arancini and baccala mantecato and a longer list of piatti: cappellacci, lumache, rigatoni, hake in saor, scallop crudo, white polenta, and a lobster risotto. The format leans toward grazing and sharing rather than a single centered dish.

Service runs notably attentive for the category, down to small details like replacing a drink without being asked when something about it has changed. SRV was a James Beard Foundation Best New Restaurant semifinalist in 2017.
