Our Take

Tonino is the rare neighborhood Italian spot that actually behaves like one. It's small, unfussy, and built around the kind of food people in Jamaica Plain eat on a regular Tuesday, not just for an occasion. The taleggio cappelletti is the dish worth building a visit around, and the pizza bianca works as a genuine choose-your-own-adventure — ricotta and hot honey, eggplant caponata, whatever mood you're in.

Take the two counter seats that look into the open kitchen if you can get them. The room is warm without trying hard at it, good for a date and just as good for showing up alone. That ease is the point: nothing here is performing.

The complaints that surface are real but narrow — an off night here, a dish that didn't land there — the kind of inconsistency that shows up in any small kitchen running hard covers. They don't undercut the larger pattern, which is a restaurant that delivers good food and good service with enough regularity that the neighborhood treats it as a given. That's the fundamentals, done right, night after night.

The Spot
Tonino is an Italian-inspired neighborhood restaurant in Jamaica Plain, drawing on the trattorias, enotecas, and aperitivo bars found in the smaller neighborhoods around Rome. The kitchen works from scratch, built on the idea of using every ingredient fully rather than wastefully.

The menu centers on dishes like taleggio cappelletti and a pizza bianca that can be customized with toppings such as ricotta and hot honey or eggplant caponata. The room is small, with two-tops suited to dates and a pair of counter seats in back that look directly into the open kitchen.

The restaurant's chef was a James Beard Foundation Best Chef: Northeast semifinalist in 2026.
