Bar Volpe is doing exactly what Southie's Italian scene needed: cooking with real intention instead of coasting on red-sauce nostalgia. The casarecce al nero earns its reputation — jet-black pasta, spicy and bright, finished with lobster in a way that feels generous rather than showy. The farro arancini and PEI mussels in shrimp butter hold their own as openers, and neither dish reads like filler before the main event.

The room backs up the cooking. Wood-lined booths and a well-lit bar make it a place you want to linger, and the drink list knows what it's doing — a lambrusco worth ordering by the glass, a Negroni list that includes a mezcal version for anyone who's never tried one. Service runs smooth on most nights, though a few diners have hit uneven stretches and portions that felt tight for the price.

None of that undercuts the core case. This is the best Italian cooking in the neighborhood, full stop, and a Bib Gourmand recognition from the Michelin Guide confirms what the plates already argue. Parking is a pain and consistency can wobble — go anyway, and get the nero.

The Spot
Bar Volpe is both a restaurant and a working pastificio — fresh pasta is made daily on-site, feeding a menu built around Southern Italian cuisine and wood-fired cooking. Chef Karen Akunowicz trained as a pasta maker in Modena and previously cooked at the enoteca L'Avian Blu before bringing that technique to South Boston.

The primi list runs through dishes like casarecce al nero with lobster and chili crisp, malloreddus in a spicy sausage ragu with pecorino sardo and saffron, ricotta gnocchi with caviar and lemon butter, and spaghetti al limone with jonah crab and pangrattato. Secondi include a truffled rotisserie chicken with black truffle and Tuscan kale, a grilled swordfish skewer with ras el hanout carrot, and a Sardinian paella built on fregola, artichokes, and shellfish meant for sharing. The dining room pairs wood-lined booths with a lit bar and a wine and cocktail list that leans into lambrusco and negroni variations.

Michelin awarded Bar Volpe a Bib Gourmand in 2025.
