Our Take

Carmelina's works a small menu hard, and the North End doesn't need another red-sauce house that coasts on nostalgia. This one earns its crowds. The seared tuna arrabbiata, finished with a briny olive tapenade, has the kind of acid and heat that makes a seafood-forward Sicilian menu feel specific rather than generic. The lemony spaghetti arrives buried under littleneck clams, enough that the dish reads as a statement rather than a special.

Then there's the chicken parm, carried out of the open kitchen in pans hot enough to draw audible reactions from the dining room. That's not an accident — it's a kitchen that understands theater sells a dish as much as technique does, and here both are present.

Service and atmosphere hold up their end too, which matters in a neighborhood where plenty of rooms get the food half right and the rest wrong. The wait is real and worth planning around; go for an early dinner or a late lunch if you want in without the line.

A Michelin Selected nod in 2025 confirms what the room already knows. If you're only eating in the North End once, eat here.

The Spot
Carmelina's has been serving Sicilian comfort food with a Mediterranean twist on Hanover Street since 2012. Executive Chef Damien DiPaola, working alongside Chef di Cucina Michael Hollenkamp, built the menu around old family recipes turned into modern Italian dishes, with fresh pasta and seafood as the constants. Pasta options range from classic tomato sauce and gorgonzola cream to a chicken, sausage, and peppers alfredo, while seafood runs from seared tuna arrabbiata with olive tapenade to a lemony spaghetti piled with littleneck clams.

The dining room is built around an open kitchen, letting guests watch dishes — including chicken parm carried straight from the pass — come together from start to finish. Family photos line the walls of the small, intimate space, and retractable front walls open the room to the street during summer months.

Michelin selected Carmelina's for its guide in 2025.
