Our Take

Fox & the Knife makes its case without needing the North End's address or its reputation. South Boston gets a low-lit, vibey room on West Broadway, and the food backs up the mood: the chef's background as a pasta maker in Modena shows in a tagliatelle bolognese that reads as the kitchen's thesis statement, not just a menu line. Order it. Ordering any pasta here is non-negotiable, and that's not a hedge — it's the one directive worth following blindly.

The rest of the menu doesn't coast on the pasta's reputation. The taleggio-stuffed focaccia has earned cult status for a reason, and the crispy pork Milanese with saffron aioli gives the menu a second anchor dish instead of leaning on one hit. The amari list goes deeper than almost anywhere else in the city, and a flight is the right way to find out how deep. Service and atmosphere hold up across repeat visits — this isn't a kitchen that's good once and inconsistent after.

A James Beard Best New Restaurant finalist nod in 2020 and a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2025 confirm what the plates already argue: this is sustained, not a flash. Boston's Italian conversation keeps defaulting to one neighborhood. Fox & the Knife is the argument against that default.

The Spot
Fox & the Knife is an enoteca and restaurant in South Boston built around regional Italian cooking, drawing on traditions running from Modena and Torino to Napoli. The menu centers on handmade pastas and antipasti, alongside an aperitivo and amaro program.

The tagliatelle bolognese and a taleggio-stuffed focaccia have become regulars' orders, and the crispy pork Milanese, finished with a saffron aioli, shows up alongside one of the more extensive amaro lists in the city, including flights for guests who want to work through it.

Chef Karen Akunowicz, formerly the executive chef at Myers + Chang, worked as a chef and pasta maker at L'Avian Blu Enoteca in Italy before opening Fox & the Knife.

Michelin awarded the restaurant a Bib Gourmand in 2025, and the James Beard Foundation named it a finalist for Best New Restaurant in 2020.
