Our Take

Neptune Oyster is a sliver of a room in the North End that runs on one idea executed relentlessly well: shellfish, handled with total confidence, served fast enough to keep a line permanently out the door. The shucking station sits right in the window, the day's selection chalked up on a mirror behind the bar, and the lobster roll has become the thing North End regulars and tourists alike stand on the sidewalk for. That's not hype outrunning the kitchen — the raw bar earns the wait.

The room is tiny, counter seats are the move, and the energy reads like a coastal New England postcard that decided to throw a party instead of just sitting there. Service keeps pace with a packed house without losing warmth, which is the harder trick. Consistency is the real achievement here: this isn't a kitchen coasting on one good night caught by a crowd.

The recognition follows the plate, not the other way around. A James Beard Outstanding Restaurant semifinalist nod and a Michelin selection confirm what the line already knows. Go hungry, go early if you can, and take the counter seat. This is the oyster bar the rest of the city measures itself against.

The Spot
Neptune Oyster occupies a tight counter-and-bar room in the North End, with a shucking station set in the front window and a mirror behind the bar where the day's oyster selection is chalked up fresh. Seating is close quarters, and the room draws crowds that spill onto the sidewalk, but the format stays simple: a raw bar paired with a short list of New England seafood staples.

The menu runs through dishes like the Maine Lobster Roll on toasted brioche, served hot with butter or cold with mayo, Wellfleet Clam Chowder with salt pork and thyme, and a Bluefin 'Coyne' Crostini with tuna tartare on Iggy's baguette. The N.O.B. Clambake stacks a whole two-pound Maine lobster with clams, chorizo, and sweet corn, while the Neptune Johnnycake comes topped with honey butter and sturgeon caviar. Produce comes from named New England farms — Verrill Farm, Ward's Berry Farm, Maplebrook Farms — alongside house-made tartar sauce and a daily shellfish selection.

Neptune Oyster was a James Beard Foundation Outstanding Restaurant semifinalist in 2020, and Michelin selected it for its guide in 2025.
