Terry Black's Barbecue traces its style back to Lockhart, Texas, where founder Terry Black learned the craft over generations before bringing it to Austin's Bouldin Creek on Barton Springs Road.
The format is classic Central Texas meat market: order counter-service, by the pound, from sliced brisket, beef ribs, pork ribs, turkey, chopped beef, and both original and jalapeno cheese sausage. Sides include mac and cheese, pinto beans, green beans, Mexican rice, cream corn, potato salad, and cole slaw, with banana pudding, peach cobbler, chocolate pudding, and mini pecan pie for dessert. Family packs scale the order up for larger groups.
Indoor seating is compact, and much of the activity happens outside, where the pits stay in view as briskets go in and come out.
A Taste of Koko named Terry Black's among Austin's best barbecue in 2025, and Austin Food Magazine included it on a 2026 best-of list. Michelin selected the restaurant for its 2025 guide.
