Our Take

KG BBQ runs out of a trailer at Oddwood Brewing, and the format tells you nothing about what's coming. This is Central Texas barbecue with an Egyptian twist, and it's not a garnish or a special-occasion stunt — it's the whole point of the operation. The technique is straight smokehouse: the bark, the smoke ring, the patience. The seasoning and the sides are doing something Austin's other barbecue trailers aren't.

That's the argument for going: a city with no shortage of great barbecue, and no shortage of barbecue mashups either, still doesn't have another version of this. It reads like it should have existed all along, which is the mark of a genuinely good idea executed well rather than a novelty chasing attention.

The recognition backs up what's on the tray. Back-to-back Michelin Bib Gourmand nods, a James Beard semifinalist nomination for Best Chef in Texas, and a spot on national best-of lists. None of that happens for a trailer serving competent brisket with a gimmick attached. It happens because the Egyptian influence is real cooking, not decoration, and because the barbecue underneath it holds up on its own terms.

The Spot
KG BBQ started with a career change. KG left a corporate finance job in Cairo and moved to Austin in 2016 to pursue barbecue, later graduating from culinary school and training under local pitmasters. That path led to what he calls the Egyptian Cowboy, a menu that folds the flavors of Egypt and the Middle East into traditional Texas smoking technique.

Brisket sits at the center of the menu, served alongside rice bowls and salads that regularly come up among what people order. It's a pairing that sets KG BBQ apart from a standard Central Texas smokehouse lineup.

The restaurant holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand for both 2024 and 2025, and KG was named a James Beard Foundation semifinalist for Best Chef Texas in 2023. KG BBQ has also appeared on Eater's Essential 38 list for Austin and carries a 9.4 score from The Infatuation.
