Our Take

Distant Relatives sits outside downtown's barbecue gravity, in Southeast Austin, and it earns the trip by refusing to just replay the Central Texas script. The city's traditional pitmasters built their reputation on a minimalist, salt-and-pepper approach, and that approach is still worth defending. This kitchen instead treats smoke as one tool among several, working new techniques and flavors into the format rather than around it. The result reads as barbecue that argues with the region's own orthodoxy and wins often enough to matter.

That argument doesn't come from novelty alone. The cooking holds up against the traditionalists on their own terms — texture, bark, doneness — while doing things they don't attempt. It's the difference between a restaurant chasing trend and one with an actual point of view about what barbecue can be.

The recognition backs the case rather than making it: back-to-back Michelin Bib Gourmands and consecutive James Beard semifinalist nods for the chef. Those are confirmations of a kitchen that already knew what it was doing before anyone else noticed. Distant Relatives isn't nostalgia food, and it isn't trying to be.

The Spot
Distant Relatives shares its Southeast Austin property with Meanwhile Brewing Co., pulling its beverage list straight from that neighbor. Since opening in 2020, it has built its barbecue around the textures and heritage of the African diaspora in the United States: pecan and mixed hardwood smoke, heightened spice profiles, traditional preservation methods, and a nose-to-tail, root-to-stem approach sourced from the local food system.

The restaurant frames itself as much around community as cooking, with stated partnerships with local farmers, artisans, and other food-focused organizations feeding into what ends up on the smoker and the plate.

Recognition has followed. Michelin awarded Distant Relatives a Bib Gourmand in both the 2024 and 2025 guides, and its chef has been named a James Beard Foundation Best Chef Texas semifinalist in both 2022 and 2023. Eater has also placed it on its Essential 38 list for Austin.
