The Spot
Tadich Grill traces back to 1849, when Nikola Budrovich, Frano Kosta, and Antonio Gasparich set up a tent on Long Wharf grilling fresh fish over charcoal for the sailors and merchants working the pier. John Tadich, who arrived in San Francisco in 1871, bought the business in 1887, and it has carried his name since.

The menu today runs to seafood, creamy casseroles, and hearty stews, served in a long wooden-bar room with stained-glass booths, white tablecloths, and waiters in white jackets. The menu is large, covering dishes that have largely disappeared from other San Francisco kitchens. Regulars tend to come back less for culinary surprise than for the continuity itself — the same room, the same order, year after year.

Tadich Grill won the James Beard Foundation's America's Classics award in 1998.
