Our Take

Anchor Oyster Bar doesn't try to be anything other than what it is: an old-school Castro seafood counter with light-up anchors on the wall and a whiteboard where you scrawl your name and wait. That wait is the only real complaint anyone has, and it exists because the kitchen earns it.

The menu is short and unbothered by trend — a daily oyster selection, prawn salad, cioppino served in bowls big enough to swim in. The crab cakes are the standout, crisp outside and delicate within, but the real case for this place is consistency across the whole list. Nothing is phoned in because nothing is trying to be clever. Clam chowder becomes a thing you crave later for no good reason, on no particular schedule.

Service keeps pace even when the room is slammed, inside and out on the parklet. This is a neighborhood institution that outside recognition has caught up to rather than created — a Michelin Bib Gourmand confirms what the Castro already knew. Sit at the counter, write your name on the board, and wait. It's worth it.

The Spot
Anchor Oyster Bar is a small, old-school seafood spot in the Castro, decorated with light-up anchors and life preservers, with seating inside and on a street-side parklet. The menu sticks to classic raw-bar and seafood-shack territory: a daily selection of oysters, prawn salad, crab cakes, and bowls of cioppino and clam chowder built for serious appetites.

The space is tight, and it fills up, but service inside and out on the parklet moves efficiently once you're seated. Regulars return for the cioppino in particular, along with the daily oyster selection and the clam chowder.

Michelin awarded Anchor Oyster Bar a Bib Gourmand in 2026.
