Our Take

Nightbird runs a ten-course tasting menu that keeps its ambition at the plate, not the price tag — fewer dollars per course than a single cocktail elsewhere in the city. That math only holds up if the kitchen delivers, and it does, start to finish: a quail egg opener gives way to several rounds of bread worth lingering over, closing on a sorbet that earns its spot as dessert rather than a courtesy palate cleanser.

What stands out is the consistency across ten courses. Nothing coasts, nothing reads like the plate the kitchen phoned in just to hit the count. The room matches the food — service that tracks the pace of a long menu without dragging, an atmosphere that feels considered rather than staged for the occasion.

Michelin selected Nightbird for its 2026 guide, which lines up with what regulars already know: this is one of the city's more dependable tasting-menu rooms, the kind people return to rather than check off once. It isn't reinventing the format. It's executing a long menu at a high level, course after course, without a weak link. That's rarer than it should be.

The Spot
Nightbird opened in Hayes Valley in 2016 under chef and owner Kim Alter, serving a nightly tasting menu built around California's seasonal bounty. The format is prix-fixe, with ingredients sourced from the farmer's market and the menu shifting with the seasons.

A typical night might move through a green strawberry sofrito beignet with kaluga caviar, a taste-of-the-ocean course of white asparagus, escargot, and smoked mussel, fermented farro sourdough with Maine lobster and romesco, dry-aged squab with squash and gooseberry, and wagyu shortrib in a salsa macha butter broth, closing with a tonka bean ice cream and truffle sorbet course. The restaurant has built a following among repeat regulars who return as much for the pacing and service as for the food.

Michelin selected Nightbird in its 2026 guide. Chef Kim Alter was a James Beard Best Chef semifinalist in 2018 and 2020, and the restaurant's chef was a Best Chef: California semifinalist in 2026.
