Our Take

Zuni Café has been serving the same idea since 1979: seasonal, unfussy California cooking, no imported ingredients required to make a point. The brick-oven chicken and its warm bread salad are the reason the restaurant still gets mentioned in the same breath as this city's defining dishes, and they hold up on a plate the way few 40-plus-year-old signatures do. The room helps the case — big glass windows, white tablecloths, a sunlit dining room that still feels like an occasion rather than a museum piece.

The fair knock is that Zuni can coast on its own legend, and there are nights the wait tests that patience. But the kitchen keeps answering with food that doesn't need the nostalgia to work, and the service holds the line consistently enough that regulars keep coming back for the chicken alone. This isn't a relic performing its old hits. It's a restaurant that built the template other places are still copying.

The recognition backs up the plate, not the other way around: a James Beard Outstanding Restaurant win, two prior finalist nods, an Outstanding Service win, and a current Michelin selection. Four decades in, Zuni still earns the seat.

The Spot
Zuni Café opened on Market Street in February 1979, part of an early wave of California cuisine built on seasonal, often local ingredients. It continues today under chef Gilbert Pilgram, with a daily-changing menu drawing on traditional French and Italian cooking methods. Nearly all of the produce, meat, and fish is sourced sustainably, including named citrus — calamansi, Eureka lemons, Bearss and Rangpur limes — from Stepladder Creamery.

The brick-oven roast chicken and its warm bread salad have become the restaurant's signature order, served alongside an oyster and shellfish bar that runs all day and a long-standing signature margarita. The dining room is set with white tablecloths beneath large street-facing windows, and the restaurant serves lunch, brunch, and dinner.

Zuni Café was selected in the Michelin Guide for 2026 and has received multiple James Beard Foundation honors, including the Outstanding Restaurant award in 2003 and Outstanding Service in 2018; the restaurant's chef was named Outstanding Chef in 2004 and Best Chef in 2000.
