Our Take

Gary Danko has been running the same disciplined operation since 1999, and the discipline shows. Choose between the tasting menu or a three-to-five course prix fixe, and either way the pacing is the real craft: courses land just as the last plate clears, no dead air, no waiting around wondering if the kitchen forgot you. Waiters keep water glasses full and bread baskets moving without ever feeling like they're hovering. Dessert comes with petit fours nobody asked for and everybody wants.

That level of service isn't an accident. The restaurant built its reputation on it, and the room still runs like that reputation is something to defend rather than coast on. The one real knock is volume — a dining room this busy gets loud, and it's the single complaint that keeps surfacing against an otherwise clean record.

The honors back up what the dining room already tells you: a James Beard Best New Restaurant win, an Outstanding Service win and finalist nod, and continued Michelin selection decades later. Consistency at this level, sustained this long, is the actual achievement. This is a restaurant that knows exactly what it is and executes it without slippage.

The Spot
Restaurant Gary Danko has anchored Fisherman's Wharf since 1999, built on classic French cooking technique and fresh, locally grown and raised ingredients drawn from the region's seasonal offerings. Chef Gary Danko offers both a set tasting menu and a three-to-five course prix fixe, with courses paced so tightly that one plate arrives just as the last is cleared.

Service is central to the experience: guests are met at a roped entrance and kept closely attended throughout the meal, with a steady rotation of house bread and a dessert course finished with complimentary petit fours.

Michelin selected the restaurant for its 2026 guide. It also won James Beard Awards for Best New Restaurant in 2000 and Outstanding Service in 2006, and the restaurant's chef was a James Beard Outstanding Chef finalist multiple times between 2002 and 2013, then a semifinalist in 2014.
