El Metate opened on Bryant Street in 2002 and is led by Francisco Hernandez and David Carreno. The dining room is colorful and energetic, with brightly painted walls, music, and hand-painted Talavera pottery setting the tone.
The kitchen makes its tortillas by hand and runs a fresh salsa bar alongside a menu of carne asada and al pastor tacos, chicken mole, a fish taco plate, chile relleno, and tortas. Mission-style burritos are a standout here, built long and thin and loaded with guacamole and sour cream.
El Metate also handles catering, with shareable trays of tacos, burritos, rice and beans, and vegetarian options for groups.
