Our Take

La Taqueria has been making the same argument since 1973: a burrito doesn't need rice. Strip it out and the meat, beans, guacamole, and cheese stop hiding behind filler and start doing the work themselves. The carne asada is the reason to come, best ordered as a super burrito and doused in the free green salsa every table gets, or the red if you want heat, or a handful of blistered serranos if you want more than that. Get it dorado, crisped on the plancha, and the thing turns into something closer to a griddled sandwich than a wrapped burrito, messier and better for it.

Whether that qualifies as real Mission-style is a fight San Francisco never resolves, and it doesn't need to be. What's not debatable is the consistency: the kitchen has been running this exact menu long enough to have no excuse for missing, and it mostly doesn't.

The line outside is real and the hours are shorter than they should be. Go anyway. A James Beard America's Classics win and a Michelin selection confirm what the neighborhood already knew: this is the standard other taquerias get measured against.

The Spot
La Taqueria has been serving Mission-style burritos from this Mission Street storefront since 1973, under owner Miguel Jara. It's a neighborhood, take-out-focused spot built around a rice-less format the restaurant calls the Miguel-style burrito — meat, pinto beans, guacamole, and cheese, no rice filler.

The carne asada burrito is a standard order, and the dorado version — crisped on the plancha until the tortilla browns and the cheese melts through — is the house twist for anyone who wants it meltier. Tables get free green salsa, with red or blistered serranos available for more heat. Taco dorados and quesadillas round out a short menu. Lines outside are a regular feature of eating here, and the space is small with fast turnover.

James Beard Foundation named La Taqueria an America's Classic in 2017, and Michelin selected the restaurant for its 2026 guide.
