Our Take

El Buen Comer runs on guisados, the Mexico City-style stews that anchor the menu and justify the trip on their own. Pork and chicken dominate the list, ladled into ceramic bowls in portions sized to share or built into a full plate with rice and beans. The costillas de puerco en salsa verde con nopales is the one to order first — pork ribs cooked slow enough that the tang of the green salsa has fully worked its way into the meat.

The rest of the menu — enchiladas, tacos, tortas — holds up its end without trying to outshine the stews, which is the right call. This is a kitchen that knows what it does best and builds everything else around it.

The room matches the food. It reads less like a restaurant and more like a long-running family gathering, and the service keeps that feeling intact rather than formalizing it away. A few visitors have found it loud or oversold, but that's the cost of a small neighborhood spot that got noticed.

Michelin selected it in 2026. The guisados earned that on their own merits.

The Spot
El Buen Comer is chef Isabel Caudillo's take on the Mexican home cooking she grew up with in Mexico City, served in a casual neighborhood setting in Bernal Heights. The kitchen works from scratch, using organic masa and hand-rolling its own enchiladas rather than relying on shortcuts.

Guisados sit at the center of the menu — slow-cooked, earthy sauces stewed with meat or vegetables and served alongside rice and beans, offered in small or large portions or as a full plato fuerte. The costillas de puerco en salsa verde con nopales is one standout among them. Elsewhere, tacos and enchiladas come with shredded beef or chicken in Caudillo's green and red sauces, while mole verde simmers pork in a bright tomatillo-and-chile sauce and rajas con crema brings roasted poblanos cooked with cream.

El Buen Comer was selected for the Michelin Guide in 2026.
