Our Take

Nopalito is what reliable actually looks like when a kitchen takes it seriously. The totopos under queso fresco, the crema-topped taquitos, the carnitas soft enough to pull apart with a spoon — this is Californian-Mexican food built on technique that doesn't announce itself, just works, meal after meal. Nopa's sister restaurant inherited the same discipline: nothing fussy, nothing undercooked, a menu that knows exactly what it's doing with pozole and quesadillas instead of reaching past them.

The room earns its keep too. The heated patio and the bar make walk-ins realistic, the food moves fast, and a mezcal margarita shows up before you've finished deciding what else to order. That kind of consistency is rarer than people admit — most places slip somewhere between the drink and the check. Nopalito doesn't.

A few recent visitors have groused about value and hype, and sure, this isn't the showiest plate in the city. But the volume of people who keep coming back, Friday after Friday, for the same taquitos and the same reliable room, says more than the stray complaint does.

Michelin selected it in the current guide, which is confirmation, not the argument. The argument is a kitchen that has figured out exactly what it wants to be and executes it without fail.

The Spot
Gonzalo Guzman grew up farming corn, beans, chiles, and tomatoes in the small village of El Aguila, Veracruz, where he learned to cook from his mother. He opened Nopalito in San Francisco's NoPa neighborhood in 2009 with partners Allyson Jossel and Jeff Hanak, built around traditional, from-scratch Mexican cooking paired with local Bay Area ingredients.

The kitchen turns out totopos topped with queso fresco, crema-topped taquitos, pozole, quesadillas, and carnitas cooked tender enough to pull apart with a spoon. The drink program centers on tequila, mezcal, and fresh aguas frescas. After running satellite spots on 9th Avenue and an 18th Street taco window for a stretch, the restaurant's focus has moved back fully into the original Broderick Street location, a neighborhood-style, casual restaurant rather than a formal dining room.

Nopalito also runs a retail line of house-made salsas, chips, and spicy garbanzo beans. The restaurant was selected for the Michelin Guide in 2026.
