Our Take

Boia De sits in a Buena Vista strip mall and gives you nothing a strip mall promises. Inside it's close, dark, a little strange — eating in what feels like a submarine with monkeys printed on the bathroom wallpaper and logos designed by friends of the house. The personality is handmade, not styled, and it reads that way at the table.

The food plays the same trick. It's Italian on the menu and genuinely hard to categorize on the plate — pastas that rotate with the seasons sitting next to dishes the kitchen has locked in and refuses to mess with. That mix of movement and restraint is the real skill: knowing exactly what to leave alone. Since opening in 2019 the kitchen hasn't coasted on its early buzz, which is rarer than the buzz itself.

There's also a staff healthcare surcharge on the receipt, one of the first in the city, and prices that haven't followed it upward into excess. That's not incidental — it's the same discipline that keeps the cooking sharp.

A Michelin star and a spot on a national recognition list followed, confirmation of what the room already knew. Go for the pasta. Go back for whatever changed.

The Spot
Boia De is an intimate, chef-driven restaurant in Buena Vista serving Italian food that reads straightforward on the menu but doesn't always land that way on the plate. It opened in 2019 and has kept its menu moving since: the pastas change with the seasons while a core set of dishes stays locked in.

That core includes pappardelle alla lepre with Florida rabbit, saffron tonnarelli alle vongole with middle neck clams and chowder, tagliolini nero with king crab and truffle pate, and a white truffle tagliatelle finished with truffle butter and parmesan. Beyond pasta, the menu runs through baked clams with nduja, beef tartare with tonnato and crispy capers, hamachi crudo in a habanero-passion fruit aguachile, an 8 oz. pork collar with apple mostarda, and lamb ribs fra diavola. House-made ice cream and sorbet, served by the scoop, close things out.

The room itself is small and tightly packed into its strip mall setting, with a playful streak running through the decor — monkey-print wallpaper in the bathroom, logos designed by friends of the restaurant.

Michelin awarded Boia De one star in its 2026 guide. The restaurant's chef was a James Beard Best Chef semifinalist in 2020.
