Our Take

Obélix opens as a contradiction and never resolves it, which is the point. The room runs loud and social, full of clinking glasses and celebration energy, while the kitchen sends out a foie-gras taco next to dry-aged duck breast. It's French technique without French formality, and the tension between those two things is what makes the place work rather than what undermines it.

That's a hard needle to thread. Plenty of rooms try upscale-casual and land at neither; Obélix commits to the bit at the plate level, letting a classical hand handle rich, technical dishes while the format around them stays loose. A solo diner at the bar gets the same kitchen as a six-top splitting foie gras.

The recognition backs up what's on the table rather than substituting for it: three consecutive years selected by Michelin, a James Beard Best New Restaurant finalist nod, and a pastry program serious enough to draw a Beard semifinalist nomination on its own. Dinner reservations move fast for good reason. If they don't work, lunch and weekend brunch are worth chasing instead of walking away.

The Spot
Obélix serves French bistro cooking in River North, with escargot and a gem lettuce salad among the dishes reviewers call out, alongside foie gras and pastries that regulars describe making deliberate trips for. The wine list runs deep enough to give the room its own identity alongside the food.

The pastry program has its own presence here — Obélix runs a dedicated Pastry To-Go counter alongside the dining room. Beyond dinner, the restaurant also serves lunch and prix fixe, weekend brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, and a full cocktail and wine-by-the-glass program, with private events and large party accommodations available as well.

Recognition has followed quickly. Michelin selected Obélix for its guide in 2023, 2024, and 2025. The James Beard Foundation named it a Best New Restaurant finalist in 2023 and named its pastry program a 2026 semifinalist for Outstanding Pastry Chef.

Service tone can vary visit to visit, and the room's polish reads as pretentious to some, but the food keeps people returning. Popular dishes sell out, so what's available shifts night to night.
