Topolobampo is Rick Bayless's fine-dining room in River North, built around stories from Mexico's people, places, and history translated into a tasting menu that changes every six to eight weeks without repeating a dish. The cooking stays rooted in Mexican tradition even as it rarely resembles what you'd find in a traditional Mexican kitchen, presented instead through a contemporary, fine-dining lens. Chef de Cuisine Meagan O'Connor and Pastry Chef Jennifer Enyart have each spent decades alongside Bayless learning from cooks across Mexico.
The recognition here runs deep. Michelin has awarded Topolobampo one star nearly every year from 2011 through 2025, and the James Beard Foundation named it Outstanding Restaurant in 2017 after a long run as a finalist in that category and in Outstanding Service. Bayless himself won the Foundation's Best Chef award in 1991. Chicago Magazine included Topolobampo among the city's best again in 2025.
