Poke-Poke started as a food window on the Venice Beach Boardwalk in 2010, opened by husband-and-wife team Jason McVearry and Trisha Fortuna. Jason had spent time living on Oahu, and the poke he serves reflects that: fish-focused, made to order, without the piled-on toppings and pre-made sauces common at mainland poke shops.
Bowls start with the fish itself, dressed with shoyu, sesame oil, onion, and sesame seeds, with extras like avocado or ginger added rather than stacked on. The business relocated to Austin and has grown into multiple locations around the city, including this one in Dawson, while remaining family-owned and operated by McVearry and Fortuna.
The Dawson spot carries the same casual, counter-service feel as the rest of the Austin locations, with regulars pointing to the fish quality and service as reasons they keep coming back.
