Our Take

Perry's has served sushi in Adams Morgan for 40 years, and the room still reads like a neighborhood living room rather than a special-occasion stage. Under the crane and chrysanthemum wallpaper, suited professionals, families, and George Washington students share the same loud, high-spirited room, and the noise works in the restaurant's favor. This is a place built for both the routine dinner and the blowout celebration, and it holds up under either.

The reason to trust the room is what's coming out of the kitchen. A new executive chef arrived in 2023 and pushed the traditional sushi program toward inventive Japanese versions without losing the reason people have kept coming back for four decades. The food carries the celebration, not the wallpaper or the crowd noise.

That kitchen shift paid off fast. The chef took home the James Beard Foundation's Emerging Chef award in 2024, and Perry's has landed on both local and national year-end lists since. None of that is why the food works — it's confirmation of something the restaurant was already doing right: exceptional sushi, priced sanely, served without pretension in a room that never stops feeling like a party.

The Spot
Perry's occupies a historic building on Columbia Road NW, with the main dining room up a flight of stairs and a rooftop patio one flight above that — there's no elevator. The space has built a reputation as a neighborhood staple, running sushi service alongside its long-standing Sunday drag brunch.

The menu covers sushi a la carte, a dedicated Japanese breakfast, and a dinner menu, backed by a full bar and rotating cocktail list. Perry's also runs a sake club, curating a new selection of sakes with tasting notes every two months for members.

Chef Masako Morishita leads the kitchen and won the James Beard Foundation's Emerging Chef award in 2024. Perry's has been named an Eater essential, rated 9/10 by The Infatuation, and included on Washingtonian's best-of list for 2025.
