Our Take

Maison Bar à Vins sits in a former Adams Morgan row home that spent decades as a nightclub, restored over a long renovation back to its Victorian bones. The result reads like a parlor rather than a set piece — a 12-seat bar under art deco lighting, stools that feel pulled from another decade entirely. It doesn't chase the city's celebrity-chef glare. It's built by people who worked on Lutèce and Pascual, and it shows in the restraint.

The wine list is the real argument here: over a thousand bottles deep, heavy on biodynamic producers, backed by a by-the-glass program that actually rewards curiosity instead of punishing it. The Maison Martini, built with melted butter and pine-forward gin, signals a bar program that isn't just an afterthought to the cellar. Service and food both land as steady rather than showy, which is the correct choice for a room this considered.

The trophy case backs up what the room already proves — a James Beard Best New Restaurant finalist nod, a Michelin selection, a Robb Report mention. None of that is the point. The point is a jewel-box room in Adams Morgan doing exactly what it set out to do, without noise.

The Spot
Maison Bar à Vins occupies a three-story Adams Morgan brownstone that spent three decades as the Cuban nightclub Habana Village before a two-and-a-half-year renovation restored its Victorian architecture. It comes from The Popal Group, the team also behind Lutèce, Pascual, Lapis, and LaPop, built as a more relaxed, walk-in-friendly counterpart to Lutèce's reservation-only dining room. The first floor is anchored by a 12-seat bar with art deco lighting.

Executive Chef Matt Conroy leads the kitchen with Jason Chavenson, turning out French-inspired, market-driven plates built for pacing over a full evening: house-made pastas, oysters, and terrines anchor a menu of shareable dishes meant to complement the wine rather than compete with it. Raw preparations, including the beef tartare, have developed a following.

The cellar runs past a thousand bottles, anchored in France and shaped by organic and biodynamic producers alongside a strong by-the-glass selection. The cocktail list follows the same logic — the Maison Martini, shaken with melted butter and pine-forward gin, is built around a wine-based sensibility that runs through the whole bar program.

Maison was named a 2026 James Beard Foundation Best New Restaurant finalist, included on Robb Report's 2026 list of Best New Restaurants, and selected for the Michelin Guide in 2025.
