Our Take

Bresca is the rare starred restaurant that stays a bistro at heart — 14th Street energy, French technique, and a menu that plays off the honeycomb in its name without disappearing into concept. It was Ryan Ratino's first kitchen, and it still cooks with a first restaurant's hunger.

The trick is balance: dishes composed enough for the star, a room relaxed enough for a Tuesday. Washington has plenty of special-occasion French. Bresca is the one you go back to without an occasion.

The Spot
Bresca sits on 14th St NW in Washington, DC, working French culinary technique into a contemporary bistro format built around local and international ingredients. The kitchen describes its approach as bringing ingredients to the table "at their prime," with sourcing as a stated priority.

Reviewers repeatedly point to foie gras, tapioca, madeleines, Australian wagyu, linguine, short ribs, cavatelli, and blue fin tuna among the dishes that keep coming up. The room runs on high energy, with service reviewers describe as impeccable and attentive, including flexibility for special occasions.

Bresca has held a Michelin star every year from 2021 through 2025, and its chef was named a James Beard Foundation semifinalist for Best Chef Mid-Atlantic in 2023. The Infatuation scored it 9/10, Eater has named it to its essential Washington DC list, and Washingtonian included it among the city's best in 2025. Bresca is connected to sister restaurant Jônt.
