La Tejana serves Rio Grande Valley-inspired breakfast tacos, co-founded by Ana-Maria Jaramillo, who grew up in Monterrey, Mexico before her family settled in McAllen, Texas, and DC native Gus May. The shop traces back to late 2019, when the pair began selling tacos as a pop-up off the stoop of their Mount Pleasant apartment, later shifting to delivery during the pandemic before partnering with bars and restaurants around the city.
The tortillas are made by hand, and regulars point to them and the accompanying sauces as the reason the tacos have built a reputation as some of the best breakfast tacos in the DMV. Weekend lines are part of the routine here, with a following that shows up and waits, and staff get consistent credit for keeping things friendly even when the crowd backs up.
Michelin has awarded La Tejana a Bib Gourmand in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
