Amparo Fondita takes its name from the Spanish word for "shelter," also the name of chef Christian Irabién's mother and grandmother. The restaurant builds its food around the coastal regions of contemporary Mexico, combining local, seasonal ingredients with imported Mexican products.
The menu runs across dinner and weekend brunch, with a tasting menu available for guests who want a fuller run through the kitchen. Shareable small plates anchor the table, and the tres leches has developed its own following among regulars. The bar keeps its own happy hour service alongside the dining room.
Michelin awarded Amparo Fondita a Bib Gourmand in both the 2024 and 2025 Washington DC guides. Eater has named it to its Eater 38 list of essential DC restaurants, and Washingtonian included it among the city's best in 2025.
