Our Take

Ellē runs two different restaurants out of one room, and both are worth the trip. Mornings belong to the bakery counter: a guava turnover people specifically seek out, a brisket breakfast sandwich strong enough to be called one of the city's best, quiche that changes by the day. The tarragon date latte, cut with black pepper and a hint of lime, is the kind of drink that makes you reconsider what a coffee order can do.

By night the mismatched vintage dishes stay, but the food turns serious — new American cooking leaning hard on fermentation, a Caesar salad reworked into something that doesn't play it straight. Few places manage the shift from bakery counter to date-night kitchen without one side feeling like an afterthought. Here, neither does.

The line at the counter is real and the wait is earned rather than performative — the food justifies standing in it. Four Bib Gourmand nods running from 2021 through 2025, a Michelin selection, and a James Beard Best New Restaurant semifinalist nomination all point at the same thing: a neighborhood cafe that never coasted on being a neighborhood cafe.

The Spot
Ellē sits on Mt Pleasant Street NW, a neighborhood café built around baked goods and bread. Reviewers keep coming back to the cheesecake, quiche, egg-and-cheese plates, and lattes, and the space has cultivated a cozy pull that keeps a steady base of regulars returning.

The recognition here runs deep for a café of this size. Michelin selected Ellē in its 2019 guide, then awarded it a Bib Gourmand in 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025. The James Beard Foundation named it a semifinalist for Best New Restaurant in 2019, and Washingtonian included it among the city's best in 2025.

Together, that track record points to a bakery-café that's held its footing in a crowded DC food scene for years while staying, at its core, a neighborhood spot.
