The Spot
Busboys and Poets sits at the corner of 14th and V, the original location in a small chain spread across the DC area. The name nods to Langston Hughes, whose presence runs through the space in poetry quotes, art on the walls, and recurring events tied to his legacy.

The restaurant doesn't separate dining from its other identities. It's also a working bookstore and event venue, hosting author talks, poetry nights, and community gatherings alongside regular service. Andy Shallal, the company's founder, has framed the whole operation around a stated goal of inspiring social change through food, art, and conversation.

On the food side, regulars describe a relaxed, welcoming room with fresh ingredients, attentive service, and menus that accommodate vegetarian diners without much friction — the kind of place suited to lingering over a meal as much as stopping in for one.
