Rose's Luxury changed how Washington eats out: a Beard-winning, Michelin-starred kitchen that serves like a dinner party — family-style plates, the famous pork-and-lychee salad, pastas that show up in half the city's food memories — inside a Capitol Hill row house that still refuses to act important.

A decade on, the trick still works because it was never a trick; it's a point of view about generosity. Plenty of restaurants are more formal. Very few are more loved, and the gap is instructive.

The Spot
Rose's Luxury has been operating on Capitol Hill since 2013, tucked into a rowhouse at 717 8th Street SE. The restaurant works in small and shareable plates, the kind of format that turns a meal into a string of dishes passed around the table rather than a straight line through appetizer and entree.

Reviewers keep coming back to the same names: cacio e pepe, pork, catfish, soft shell crab, caviar, and a coconut ice cream that shows up again and again as a favorite. The building also holds a rooftop garden space, giving the restaurant a second setting beyond its close-quarters main room.

Michelin has awarded Rose's Luxury one star every year from 2017 through 2025 (with the exception of 2019 and 2020). The James Beard Foundation named it a Best New Restaurant semifinalist in 2014 and gave it a Best Chef win in 2016.
