Our Take

Unconventional Diner takes American comfort food and pushes it sideways with international technique, and it has kept doing that trick since 2018 without the format going stale. The room matches the intent: faux greenery, neon, Keith Haring-style art, a diner shape rebuilt for a louder decade. It reads playful, not gimmicky, because the kitchen backs it up.

The double cheeseburger is the anchor for a reason — it's the kind of dish that could coast on nostalgia and instead gets sharpened. The menu ranges wide, comfort standards next to dishes with real global reach, and the range holds together instead of scattering. That's the harder trick, and the one that matters more than the twist itself.

Four Bib Gourmand nods across recent years aren't a fluke of one strong season — they're the record of a kitchen that keeps its footing while reworking familiar plates into something sharper. National lists have taken notice too. The result is a restaurant near the convention center that outperforms its location, built for a fast, satisfying meal that still surprises people who think they know what comfort food is for.

The Spot
Unconventional Diner sits on 9th Street NW, built around modern comfort food that leans harder into technique than the diner label suggests. Chef David Deshaies' menu takes familiar shapes — pancakes, meatloaf, pot pie — and reworks them: blueberry-lavender pancakes, pot-pie poppers, and a meatloaf the restaurant itself says is nothing like anyone's mom's version.

Brunch is a draw here, with shakshuka, avocado toast, and fried okra showing up alongside dinner dishes like crab linguine, Caribbean shrimp, and taquitos — a menu that reaches past straightforward American reference points. Craft cocktails and seasonal, diner-inspired desserts round out the room.

Unconventional Diner has held a Michelin Bib Gourmand every year from 2021 through 2025, and Eater has named it to its essential 38 list for Washington, DC.
