Our Take

The Morris earns its reputation on roasted meats, and the smoked duck is the dish people arrive already thinking about. Hours over hickory give it a dark, dramatic skin, but what lands is restraint — a hearty, herb-kissed roast that doesn't need sauce theatrics. Share the half or whole bird and the fuss makes sense.

Housemade charcuterie backs up the claim that this kitchen takes meat seriously in every form, and the wine list runs long enough to need its own table of contents, built for pairing rather than show. The room is candlelit and low-key, suited to a date or a quiet celebration rather than a scene.

The wine program has drawn national recognition, a finalist nod after an earlier semifinalist mention, and Michelin has selected the restaurant. Those marks track with what's actually on the plate and in the glass. Noise and off-night inconsistency get mentioned, but they're minor set against a kitchen with a genuine signature dish and a wine program built to match it. A neighborhood restaurant worth the trip, however many buses it takes.

The Spot
The Morris is a full-service neighborhood bistro in the Mission, with a 15-seat bar serving the complete dinner menu alongside candlelit dining room tables. Chef Gavin Schmidt runs the kitchen.

The hickory-smoked duck, served whole or half for sharing, anchors the menu alongside housemade charcuterie and the Poulet Frites, a roast chicken and fries dish built to be shared. The wine list is extensive, assembled over decades of travel by the restaurant's sommelier founder and organized with enough depth to need its own table of contents.

For larger groups, the restaurant offers a prix fixe menu option for parties of seven or more.

The Morris was selected for the Michelin Guide in 2026 and has drawn repeated James Beard Foundation recognition for its wine program, reaching finalist status in 2024.
