Our Take

Cotogna has been doing one thing since 2010: cooking Italian food with a consistency that rarely wavers, dish after dish, in a Financial District room built by the people behind Quince. That pedigree shows in the restraint. Nothing is over-plumed. Prosciutto comes sliced thin and laid out plain, crudo gets nothing but a few flower petals, and the kitchen trusts ingredients that taste like they grew up close to where they're served.

The pasta is the real case for the place. The raviolo is the order: a single face-sized pouch of ricotta and egg yolk, sitting in brown butter, that breaks open into something closer to a sauce than a filling when you cut it. It's the kind of dish that makes a tasting-menu argument out of one plate on a regular menu.

Service and room match the kitchen's steadiness, and regulars keep coming back for exactly that reliability, even with complaints that the checks run high. Fair enough — this isn't a bargain. It's a restaurant that has made a fifteen-year habit of not missing, recognized with a Michelin Guide selection in 2026. That kind of consistency earns the prices it charges.

The Spot
Cotogna opened in 2010 in San Francisco's Financial District, from the team behind Quince. The menu is a la carte and changes daily, organized into spuntini, pizza, pasta, and secondi, with dishes cooked over an open fire.

Pizzas include an artichoke version with tomato conserva, mozzarella di bufala, and oregano, a wild mushroom pie with green garlic conserva, and Focaccia di Recco with stracchino. The pasta section runs from tagliatelle with a seven-meat ragù and tajarin with chicken liver and rosemary to corn triangoli and pappardelle with tromboncino squash and herbs. Secondi include rabbit loin with smoked eggplant, grilled chicken with two peppers, and petrale sole with lemon verbena and summer squash.

Regulars return often, drawn to the pasta in particular alongside consistent, welcoming service and a room that holds up on repeat visits. Michelin selected Cotogna in its 2026 guide.
