Our Take

A16 built its reputation on a wine list that treats Southern Italy as seriously as the kitchen treats its pastas and wood-fired pizzas, and the pairing works. The room in the Marina stays loud and full for a reason: the food lands, the service keeps pace, and the whole operation feels like it knows exactly what it's doing.

That wine program isn't a side note. It won the James Beard Foundation's Outstanding Wine Program award outright, after five straight years as a finalist — a decade of sustained, verified excellence, not a one-off trophy. Pair that list with the kind of rustic, ingredient-forward Italian cooking that doesn't need gimmicks to hold a table's attention, and you get a restaurant with real depth on both sides of the menu.

The caveat is real but minor: recent visits flag some inconsistency, a dish or a night that doesn't hit the same mark as the rest. A Bib Gourmand nod backs up the value case even with that wobble factored in. A16 earns its crowd. Go for the wine, stay for a kitchen that mostly deserves it.

The Spot
A16 is an a la carte Italian restaurant in San Francisco, built around pizzas made according to Vera Pizza Napoletana requirements alongside pastas and composed main courses. The kitchen sources local produce and maintains long-standing relationships with Italian wine producers.

The antipasti list includes dishes like braised meatballs in tomato and white wine, roasted octopus with chickpea and giardiniera, a little gem salad with colatura and anchovies, and trippa napoletana. On the primi side, maccaronara comes with ragù napoletano and ricotta salata, and squid ink tonnarelli is served with manila clams and garlic.

The restaurant's wine program won the James Beard Foundation's Outstanding Wine Program award in 2015, after five straight years as a finalist in that category. The restaurant's chef was a James Beard Rising Star Chef of the Year winner in 2009, following two years as a finalist. Michelin awarded A16 a Bib Gourmand in its 2026 guide.
