Our Take

Acquerello cooks Italian fine dining with the kind of technical control usually reserved for French tasting menus, and it holds up across decades rather than one good year. The kitchen's instinct for richness without heaviness shows in dishes like a turkey breast roulade paired with a confit thigh terrine, or a giblet stuffing built on truffle, chestnut, and foie gras gravy — the kind of plate that could easily collapse into excess and instead stays controlled. A caviar flight on offer signals a kitchen comfortable layering luxury rather than hiding behind it.

The room and the service match the ambition. Guests consistently describe the atmosphere as special-occasion without being stiff, and the staff gets singled out as genuinely attentive rather than merely formal. A handful of visits land flat, but the consensus is lopsided toward a kitchen performing at a high level night after night, and diners leave feeling the cost justified itself.

The recognition confirms what the plates argue on their own. Two Michelin stars, a James Beard Outstanding Restaurant semifinalist nod, and an Outstanding Wine Program finalist distinction point to a restaurant with range — food, cellar, and service all operating at the same altitude. That's rare. Acquerello has sustained it for a long time.

The Spot
Acquerello sits in a Nob Hill dining room led by chef/owner Suzette Gresham, chef de cuisine Gonzalo Agliozzo, and pastry chef Theron Marrs. The kitchen runs a Seasonal Tasting Menu alongside a vegetable-focused Tasting of Vegetables, plus a four-course a la carte menu diners can build themselves from set selections.

Recent tasting-menu dishes have included Hokkaido scallop with rhubarb, green strawberry, fennel, and olio nuovo; rabbit marubini in prosciutto brodo with English peas; ridged pasta with faux "foie gras," black truffle, and Marsala; and Anderson Ranch lamb loin with summer squash, black garlic, and tomato confit. The vegetable menu has featured heirloom and sungold tomato cappelletti with basil and diavolicchio. Sourcing runs to specifics like Tierra Farms polenta and dry-aged kohlrabi.

Michelin awarded Acquerello two stars in its 2026 guide. The restaurant's chef was a James Beard Foundation Outstanding Chef semifinalist in 2025, and the restaurant itself has drawn multiple James Beard semifinalist and finalist nods over the years across cuisine, service, and wine categories.

The room is known for polished, attentive service and an elegant atmosphere, and regulars tend to treat it as a special-occasion destination.
