Our Take

Hilda and Jesse plays breakfast-for-dinner as a serious idea, not a gimmick. The pancakes are the signature for a reason: two inches tall, soaked in cranberry maple syrup, butter running off the stack like something built to overflow. They're served all day, which is the point — this is a kitchen confident enough to let its best dish anchor both the morning rush and a Monday night.

The rest of the menu backs that confidence up. Steak and eggs sit next to a sweet potato tempura riff on avocado toast, proof the kitchen can be playful without losing the thread. At dinner, a rotating tasting menu built around whatever the chef wants to send out that night pushes into dishes like deviled sunchokes and scallops in carrot and kaffir lime broth — a genuine stretch from the diner premise, and it works.

Service and room match the food's energy, and the crowd notices: this is a place people return to, not just visit once for the pancakes. A Michelin star confirms what the plates already argue. Go for breakfast at dinner. Go for the volcano of a pancake. Either way, this is the real thing.

The Spot
Hilda and Jesse started as a brunch-for-dinner pop-up before growing into a full restaurant on Union Street in North Beach, run by chef and co-owner Ollie Liedags alongside co-owner Rachel Sillcocks. The approach mixes fine-dining technique with a looser, playful sensibility — sweet and savory riffs on familiar dishes rather than straight tradition.

Brunch is the only time the menu runs a la carte, with dishes like avocado "toast" built on tempura sweet potato, grilled beef tongue with sauce gribiche, Liberty Farms duck leg katsu, Root Down Farm chicken, and a caviar service with rolled omelette. Both brunch and dinner also offer the Chef's Adventure Menu, a five-course tasting that changes with what the kitchen wants to send out. The drink program includes house-made kombucha and other in-house creations alongside a wine list built around sparkling wine.

Michelin awarded Hilda and Jesse one star in its 2026 guide. The restaurant's chef was a James Beard Best Chef: California semifinalist in 2024.
