Our Take

LUCIEN arrived in La Jolla with intent and wore a star within a year: Elijah Arizmendi — chef de cuisine at New York's starred l'Abeille before this, with Per Se and Daniel behind him — cooking a fixed tasting menu in a room built for the slow reveal, courtyard to tunnel to table.

San Diego rarely gets openings this deliberate. The guide's quick confirmation said out loud what the first year's tables already knew: this is destination cooking that happens to live by the coast.

The Spot
Lucien is an American fine-dining restaurant in La Jolla that has drawn quick recognition since opening. Michelin included it on its Selected list in 2025 before awarding it a star in 2026, and Robb Report named it among its Best New Restaurants in both 2025 and 2026. It also holds a spot on the Eater 38.

The restaurant has built a reputation around ambition — a patio that's become part of the experience, and a following that treats the place as a local gem. Reactions to that ambition vary: some diners point to standout food and atmosphere, while others describe a gap between the fine-dining reach and the price, or between the concept and how consistently it's executed night to night.
