The Spot
El Pescador began in Del Mar in July 1974, when nineteen-year-old Jeff Norris bought secondhand refrigeration equipment and built a fish display case with sixteen-year-old Jim Mahoney, selling fresh seafood retail. Within a year the market added prepared food, starting with a shrimp cocktail, and by the end of 1976 had grown into a full seafood deli alongside the fish case.

Sean Shannon joined the operation in 1978 as a teenage cleanup hand and, seven years later, opened his own location on Pearl Street in La Jolla — the spot that's still running today. The menu expanded over the years to include char-grilled and sautéed seafood dishes served alongside the retail market, where fish arrives daily from local fishermen and other purveyors and can be bought raw to cook at home or grilled on the spot.

The format stays simple: a fish market up front, a casual dine-in setup behind it, close to La Jolla's beaches. Regulars keep coming back for the clam chowder, and the market side has built a reputation for consistently fresh fish in a clean, no-frills space.
