Our Take

Scales sits right on the Old Port waterfront and plays it straight: New England seafood done with polish instead of gimmicks. Homemade bread, fish and chips, a raw bar built for champagne and oysters. The menu doesn't chase trends, it just executes the standards better than most places attempting them.

The room backs up the kitchen. Big windows, open air, water views that turn dinner into an occasion without anyone trying too hard. Service moves at the pace a special night requires, not rushed, not slow.

Dessert is where the place shows its hand. Indian pudding and a butterscotch sundae aren't filler here, they're the kind of old-fashioned finishes a kitchen only nails when it respects the tradition rather than just listing it.

Local write-ups have kept circling back to Scales, and it's landed on a national radar too. That recognition isn't the point. The point is a restaurant that picked a lane, elegant and seafood-forward, and stayed disciplined enough inside it to make good on the whole promise.

The Spot
Scales sits on Maine Wharf at 68 Commercial Street, set back between The Dry Dock Restaurant and Ri-Ra Irish Pub, giving it a quieter footing on Portland's working waterfront. The dining room looks straight onto the harbor, and the name reflects the seafood focus at the center of the menu.

Regulars point to the quality of the seafood, locally sourced ingredients, and a staff known for being knowledgeable and attentive. The waterfront setting is part of the draw, and the place has built a steady following as a result.

Portland Press Herald named Scales among its city magazine's best in 2025, and The Infatuation has covered it as part of its Portland dining coverage.
