Our Take

Fore Street has spent the better part of a decade doing the hardest thing in restaurants: staying good long enough that nobody can call it a trend. The Beard Foundation flagged it as a semifinalist for Outstanding Restaurant year after year, from 2013 through 2020, with an Outstanding Chef nod in between. That is not a hot streak. That is a kitchen that solved consistency and never let go of it.

The city's own paper still puts Fore Street on its list of restaurants that matter, which counts for more than a single good review — it means the place has held its position in a market that watches it closely. National attention followed the same pattern, showing up more than once rather than as a one-time discovery.

None of that happens by accident in the Old Port, where plenty of restaurants open loud and fade fast. Fore Street built a reputation on repetition — the same quality, meal after meal, year after year — and that's the harder trick to pull off. It earns the recommendation on record, not on hype.

The Spot
Fore Street sits one block from the waterfront in Portland's Old Port District, open since June 1996. The dining room is arranged around a brick and soapstone hearth — a wood-burning oven, grill, and turnspit visible from most tables — where hardwood and apple wood fires do the cooking for seafood, meats, game, and vegetables.

The menu changes daily based on what local farmers, fishermen, and foragers deliver, with recurring dishes like wood oven roasted Maine rope-cultured mussels, wood-grilled hanger steak, and turnspit-roasted half chicken, alongside a rotating raw bar and a house-made charcuterie program.

Chef-partner Sam Hayward built the restaurant's reputation and was named Best Chef Northeast by the James Beard Foundation in 2004; Frederic Eliot now runs the kitchen as executive chef. Fore Street has been named a James Beard Foundation Outstanding Restaurant semifinalist across numerous years, and Hayward himself was recognized as an Outstanding Chef semifinalist. The restaurant is part of a small Portland family that also includes Street & Company, Scales, and Standard Baking Company.
