Our Take

Twelve sits on the Portland waterfront and plays it straight down the middle of special-occasion New England cooking, which turns out to be exactly the right ambition. The seasonal prix-fixe and a la carte menu takes familiar regional ingredients and reworks them with a light hand: locally foraged mushrooms, cod set in a whey broth thick with roasted onions, a lobster roll built on a hand-laminated croissant that stands with the best versions anywhere in the state. Nothing here is trying to be clever for its own sake. It's just very well executed.

The pastry program is the tell. Desserts and the croissant dough itself, made with local kamut flour, get the same care as the savory courses, and that kind of consistency across a kitchen is hard to fake. Service matches the food's confidence without turning stiff — water glasses stay full, and nobody's reciting flour provenance like a lecture.

Local recognition and national attention have both landed on Twelve, and neither reads like an accident. This is a restaurant that understands what a special occasion in Portland should taste like, and delivers it without a false note.

The Spot
Twelve occupies a waterfront spot on Thames Street on Munjoy Hill, serving modern New England cooking built around Maine seafood and produce. Chef/Founder Colin Wyatt returned to the state after twelve years in New York kitchens, including DANIEL and Eleven Madison Park, to open the restaurant as an elegant, welcoming space for dinner and cocktails.

Executive Chef Hannah Ryder leads the kitchen day to day. She trained at Cafe Boulud and Aquavit in New York before returning to Maine with stints at Evo and Chebeague Island Inn. The menu takes classic dishes and pushes them toward bolder, more refined territory, with the lobster roll and dumplings standing out as the dishes regulars mention most.

The room draws consistent praise for pairing serious cooking with a setting that stays approachable rather than stiff, and it's frequently cited as a spot for marking an occasion, with food, service, and atmosphere all pulling their weight.

Portland Press Herald named Twelve among the city's best restaurants in 2025, Travel + Leisure listed it as a local favorite the same year, and The Infatuation has reviewed it.
