Our Take

Duckfat does one thing with total confidence: fried food, done heavy, done right. The Belgian-style fries, hand-cut and served with a lineup of dipping sauces, are the anchor, but the poutine with duck gravy is the real argument — rich, sloppy, unapologetic about what it is. Brisket sandwiches and milkshakes round out a menu that never pretends to be light and doesn't apologize for it.

The room is tiny and always full, and that's part of the case for it, not against it. This is built for a covered patio, elbow to elbow with strangers, not a hushed dining room. Getting the fries to go and eating them at the picnic tables across the street, looking at the working waterfront, might be the better version of the meal, and it proves the food holds up outside the building.

It could thrive in Brooklyn or Austin or the other Portland. It belongs here instead, and local press has kept it on the short list of places that define eating in this city for years. Duckfat isn't reinventing anything. It's just doing fried potatoes and duck fat better than almost anyone bothers to.

The Spot
Duckfat traces back to a 2003 birthday trip to Amsterdam, where Nancy Pugh and Rob Evans stood on a cold street eating a cone of Belgian frites and decided Portland needed one too. Rob and Nancy, who had already taken over Hugo's a few years earlier, opened Duckfat down the street in January 2005, built around hand-punched fries twice-fried in duck fat and pressed sandwiches to go with them.

The concept now runs across two spots with separate menus. Duckfat The Original on Middle Street is a small, casual room with indoor and outdoor seating. Duckfat Frites Shack is a walk-up window tucked in an alley on Washington Ave, sharing indoor and outdoor seating with Oxbow Blending & Bottling next door — a setup that works well for larger groups.

Regulars keep coming back for the duck confit and a poutine that's built its own following, alongside staff generally described as friendly and knowledgeable. Portland Press Herald named Duckfat a best-of pick in its 2025 city magazine roundup.
